twenty one pilots

Show Review: twenty one pilots at The Forum for Emotional Roadshow

When it comes to live bands, I don’t think there’s any band better than twenty one pilots. I’ve seen the duo, Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, play several shows, ranging from intimate acoustic sessions, theaters small and large, and headline massive arenas. And they never cease to amaze me with the intensity of the show. I bet they leave the show exhausted every night as they leave it all on the stage. I had the opportunity to meet the guys backstage and help out with a quick interview, and they were as calm, collected, and super chill. Safe to say they haven’t changed much in the past few years.

Their fans match their intensity, singing along to every single lyrics as though their life depends on it. And in some ways, given the heavy and dark subject matter in songs like “Addict with a Pen,” “Holding On To You,” and “Guns for Hands,” twenty one pilots have probably played an important role for many fans.

And I completely get it. The first time I saw and met the guys was more than two years ago, and I’ve been a massive fan of their music and the messages in their lyrics. More importantly, I see how intensely their fans react and how passionate they are about the band. This is a band that has worked and toured tirelessly for the past few years, and is finally having “mainstream success” and it’s amazing to watch.

Last Saturday, the band played their headlining show at The Forum. The place was packed with adoring fans. Of course, I was in the pit and managed to make it near the front of the pit, and the experience was as intense as I’ve ever experienced at a show. I left thoroughly soaked in sweat, the majority of which was not mine, and it was incredibly, cathartic even.

I really like the bands latest album, Blurryface, which is having tremendous success at the moment, but their debut album (or albums) are the songs and moments I look forward to. The songs from Vessel and their indie releases are quintessentials and get the best reactions and make for a better live show. Regardless, these guys are phenomenal live! You really need to experience it.. even watching their few moments I captured on my iPhone are ugh… .I just want to go back and be at that show every night.

A few notes and moments I recall and need to share… and yes, I was in the pit having a blast and didn’t bother taking notes, sorry (not sorry).

The theatricality of the show was out of this world. Tyler, akin to a magician, disappeared several times throughout the set only to appear in different parts of the stadium mere moments later. I had seen him do this in smaller venues, and he was able to pull this feat in the massive venue like The Forum.

New to this tour was the zorb (that’s what they’re called right… the inflatable balloons you crawl into, right?). Tyler jumped into the inflatable balloon and ran across the audience like a manic hamster! It was incredible to see from the pit. He ran right over me, and I sadly hit the stop button and didn’t capture the entire thing on video. I may post it on Instagram at a later date.

As seen in the above videos, the guys really like to get involved with fans in the show. During “Holding On To You” (one of my faves) Tyler jumped on top of the audience and sang the first verse while being held up by the crowd.

Not to be left out of the stage antics, drummer Josh hoisted himself on a platform atop this adoring fans during “The Ride” for an epic drum solo. This is just way too cool!

If you’re ever been to a twenty one pilots show, you know it’s a tradition that they close with an epic drum off with “Trees.” But this is twenty one pilots – they don’t just drum on stage – they drum on platforms on top of the fans! It’s one of my favorite songs from them, and it’s a defining moment and perfect closure to an incredible set.

Man, I really love this band! I can’t wait to see them again!

Have you seen twenty one pilots before? Let me know!

I’d love to hear about your experience and connection with the band and their music!

A Great Big World

A Great Big World Share Inspiring “Won’t Stop Running” Music Video

Man, I really love A Great Big World! They’re not only amazing singers and musicians, but they’re two of the greatest dudes! And their voices.. wow! Hearing Chad and Ian sing live is magical. I just really love Chad’s voice!

“Won’t Stop Running” is one of the more personal songs of their latest album, When The Morning Comes. The song is about Chad’s MS diagnosis, and more generally about people overcoming challenges in their life. Really important and strong message!
