It’s Ed Sheeran‘s birthday today, so here’s a special Song of the Day shoutout to Ed!
I’ve been a fan of Ed since before his debut album came out. There were two songs from him that really caught my attention – “Small Bump” and “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You” and for two very different reasons. I’m not sure what my overall favorite Ed Sheeran song is… but at the moment, I’ll go with “Afire Love” – so emotional!
“Small Bump” is such a beautiful song, with intense lyrics. It tells a story, an emotional one, and it’s when I realize the depth of Ed’s writing skills and ability.
“You Need Me, I Don’t Need You,” especially this super long live version showcases Ed’s performance ability. I must have watched this (see clip below) at least a hundred times over the past few years. I saw him do this live in a small room, in 2012, and it was amazing. We all know now that he’s able to more than hold his own in massive venues. And he’s literally all alone on that stage, with his trusty loop pedal. He can sing, play, loop, and rhyme, and it’s amazing and impressive to watch.
I’ve had the chance to meet him a few times and see him play and he’s really that incredible. He’s one of the nicest, chillest guys. He’s genuine – he is who he is on and off camera, and that’s refreshing.
Ed, congrats on your GRAMMY win, much deserved. Hope you’re celebrating big all week!
