For the last few days, I’ve had An Awesome Wave by Alt-J and Tom Odell‘s music on repeat. It’s literally all I’ve been listening to and will be for the next few days.
An Awesome Wave is such a perfect album. I find myself gravitating to different songs on the album and my current favorite is “Taro”. I was stuck on “Tessellate” and “Matilda” for a good while, but “Taro”, the albums closing track is my absolute favorite from the album.
I really liked the song, but seeing this performance on KEXP cemented its place on my “favorite songs of all time” list.
I was captivated by the different sounds on the song, but seeing how they use the guitar to make those songs completely elevated my appreciation for the song.
I also read up on the names and references in the song, and it’s such a beautiful tribute to Gerda Taro who was the first female photojournalist during a war and the first woman to die doing so. Gerda’s personal and professional partner, Robert Capa is also mentioned in the song. The song depicts their death and their subsequent reunion in death.
The meaning and sentiment of the lyrics adds further depth and beauty to the song. I absolutely love the melody and “tribal” elements of the song. I love the noises they make with the guitar and what appears to be electric tape.
