Last Tuesday, I saw the incredible Fran Healy, lead singer-songwriter of Travis, and solo artist, play an intimate and acoustic gig at The Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. It was amazing. I’ve been a fan of Fran and Travis for a long time, and it was amazing to see him in such an intimate setting. And it was great to hear Fran play songs from his brilliant debut album, Wreckorder. I had spent about 10 days with the album before the show and it was really growing on me. Needless to say, the album and songs are now some of my favorites from the year.
The night and gig were fantastic for several reasons; the first being Fran’s voice and songwriting. Secondly, Fran is a great storyteller and is quite comfortable on stage, conversing with the audience and sharing stories about each song before the set. He talks a lot and has a great sense of humor and is personable. I would love to see Fran and/or Travis do a Storytellers session.
Fran also played for a while, he played 16 songs. His set included practically his whole debut album, Wreckorder, (except “Holiday”, and “Shadow Boxing”). Fran mentioned that Travis recorded The Invisible Band near the venue and he was reminiscing about the recording process.
Fran opened the set with “Wonderwall/Writing To Reach You”, mixed in “Dear Diary” in the middle of the set. After a dozen songs, he asked for requests, ending the show with “Flowers in the Window”, “Last Train”, “My Eyes”, and “The Humpty Dumpty Love Song”.
The show was sold out with many hardcore Travis fans, and they were not disappointed. Fran even spent some time after the show meeting and greeting fans, posing for pictures and signing autographs.
Fran is one of the most prolific songwriters of the last decade, and has an amazing voice. He is a fantastic storyteller, conveying humor as well as heartfelt emotions. Pick up Fran’s debut album, Wreckorder, featuring the sweet, poetic and melodic lead single, “Buttercups”, the amazing duet with Neko Case – “Sing Me To Sleep”, and “Say Anything” with Sir Paul McCartney on bass.
Fran will be opening for Brandon Flowers in the next few months, and like his show at The Hotel Cafe, Fran’s opening set will be acoustic, which is the best way to enjoy Fran’s music. Check the two out if you get a chance!
