Yours Truly, Angry Mob, by Kaiser Chiefs, is in my opinion, one of the best Brit-Rock/BritPop albums in recent years. There are so many great tracks on the album including “Ruby”, “Heat Dies Down”, “Everything is Average Nowadays”, “Thank You Very Much”, “The Angry Mob”, and the great “Love’s Not A Competition (But I’m Winning)”.
“Love’s Not A Competition (But I’m Winning)” is one of the standout tracks on the great album. The lyrics are very simple, but genius. We all know someone who turns everything into a competition, and keeps tabs on everything, and this song is about that one person who thinks love is a competition.
“I won’t be the one to disappoint you anymore,
I know, I’ve said all this and that you’ve heard
It all before,
The trick is getting you to think that all this was your idea.
And that this was everything you’ve ever wanted out of here,
Love’s not a competition but I’m winning.
I’m not sure what’s truly altruistic anymore,
When every good thing that I do is listed and you’re keeping score,
Love’s not a competition but I’m winning”
Paramore did a great cover of the song for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. I’m generally not a fan of Paramore‘s live tracks, but Hayley sounds really good. I like their take on the song – it’s still a rock song, but has a softer acoustic feel to it. I like the music break in the middle of the song, and the male backing vocals are a nice addition/change. I like and approve this cover.
