“Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” is an upcoming single from Alicia Keys, making it the fifth single from Alicia’s fourth studio album, The Element of Freedom. The fourth single is the duet with Beyonce, “Put It In A Love Song”, and a video was filmed, but has been postponed – possibly to a mid-April release.
“Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” is very similar to the album and the tracks on the album in that it takes a few listens to fully appreciate. With this album, Alicia continues to push and experiment the boundaries of sound, creating an eclectic and unusual album.
The song is very sensual and direct in its message, while still maintaining the integrity expected from Alicia. The song starts off a bit slow and timid, but builds throughout as Alicia professes her deep emotions, leaving her honest and vulnerable. In the song, she sings, “I was wondering maybe, could I make you a baby?/If we do the un-thinkable, would it make us look crazy?”, taking a giant leap from her first hit, “Fallin'”.
I really enjoy the variety of songs in The Element of Freedom, and the growth and maturity displayed by Alicia, which has received some criticism. In the ten years of her career, while it is not my absolute favorite Alicia Keys tracks, “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” demonstrates Alicia’s ability to render herself vulnerable, state her desires in a beautifully orchestrated song. I fell in love with Alicia and her music because of the honesty and her ability to connect with herself and her audience, and this is another example of her greatness. I appreciate the growth, the honesty, and the album.
